sigh. Kanye's search engine uses Ask and Google...but usage nets you "swag bucks" to redeem for (wait for it...) Kanye West merchandise. Not that he's sayin' you're a golddigger...

I've become addicted to Scott Aaronson's Schtetl-Optimized blog. He's taken the time to delve into a lot of the details about quantum computing that's often glossed over. The bonus is that he's able to put a lot of the physics into language that the non-quantum scientist can grasp.

Most of his posts are on the topic of what quantum computers _can't_ do. So it's interesting to read about the actual physical limits of computing and get a more realistic glimpse of what's in store for our info-driven future.

"The Internet has made finding a particular piece of music a straightforward process; simply knowing the title, performer, or composer can typically get you to the work you're looking for. But for most people, a key aspect of music appreciation lies in the discovery of the new: a previously unknown work or artist that is both appealing and fresh. Help for those looking for new music may be on the way in the form of a search tool funded by the National Science Foundation that is claimed to identify aesthetic similarities between pieces of music.
Search scene guru John Battelle pointed us to the NSF's funding announcement, which is a bit sparse on the details. Additional details can be found in previous works by the grant's recipient, including a peer-reviewed publication and a meeting presentation."

Today, a New York-based company called SpaceTime launched a new browser, free to download and use, that presents Web pages and search results as floating slabs that can be flipped through, organized, and navigated in 3-D. The graphics concepts are similar to those found in "first-person shooter" video games, in which players navigate an immersive virtual environment. But instead of shooting monsters, SpaceTime users can "fly" through search results such as Web pages, pictures, and eBay auction items. When a user turns her view to the left, the right, up, or down, she can see all the Web pages she has previously called up and zoom in on the one she wants. "SpaceTime is interesting because it constantly redraws the scene that you see ... just like a video game where you can assume any position," says Edward Bakhash, CEO of the company.

The script adds a drop-down box on the search results page that lets you choose your filter type. Just last week we noticed that Google enabled face recognition in their image search, and once again the wonderful open source scripting community has quickly put the feature to easy use. After all, who wants to manually add &imgtype=face to all their URLs, anyway? Works wherever Greasemonkey does.
