"Preload is an "adaptive readahead daemon" that runs in the background of your system, and observes what programs you use most often, caching them in order to speed up application load time. By using Preload, you can put unused RAM to good work, and improve the overall performance of your desktop system"

"Linux device designers looking for faster boot/reset times should consider alternative BIOSes, suggests Peter Seebach in a technical introduction to open BIOSes published on IBM’s DeveloperWorks website. Among other benefits, open BIOSes can save the time wasted by proprietary BIOS legacy support for MS-DOS and other unnecessary functions, Seebach notes."

With this new feature it will be possible to install applications just by clicking in a link that point to a new apt:// protocol, it will call a dialog asking if the user really wants to install that package, if yes the superuser password will be asked and the package will be installed. It’s simple like that :)

Intel recently released a new PowerTOP utility that helps discern which executables are consuming the most power. Additionally, the "tickless" kernel feature that was released in 2.6.21-rc1 can help limit power consumption by current processors by allowing them to idle for longer periods.

"Remember the paperless office? By now we were supposed to be handling all of our documents digitally, and saving trees by using computers to handle everything electronically. If you'd like to make backup copies of ephemeral content without printing it out, turn your Linux box into a PDF generation device for your entire network."

WikipediaFS allows you to mount a MediaWiki-based site on your Linux box, just as if it were a normal directory structure.

This means you can view and edit Wiki entries with any old text editor and they will be automagically updated on the Wiki.

With the release of Microsoft's new Windows operating system (Vista), more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows for various reasons. In this tutorial I will show people who are willing to switch to Linux how they can set up a Linux desktop (Debian Etch in this article) that fully replaces their Windows desktop, i.e. that has all software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that runs also on older hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.
