"Some network programs require that you configure port forwarding in your router, so that they will work properly. This is confusing to many people, causing many newcomers to give up. For those who know what they are doing, it is time consuming. There is a quicker and easier way.
Fortunately, most routers support a standard called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), meaning that you can use the BaUPnP tool to update your port forwarding settings, without going through all the menus in your router.
BaUPnP is a free command line utility that automates the process of forwarding your ports."

"The SMS add-in for Outlook allows you to send messages directly from Outlook. Utilising your address book, keyboard and mouse is much quicker than using your handset to type and send messages."

"I periodically receive inquiries from friends asking for the easiest way to access files and folders on a FTP server. They normally have their own FTP server setup at home, and they want to ensure fast access to their files without having to mess with third-party applications. Is it possible to quickly map a FTP to a drive? You bet! The solution I’m about to show you doesn’t exactly assign a drive letter to the FTP server, but it will essentially serve the same purpose as a drive."

"This utility clocks in at a tiny 5kb and runs in your tasktray. Once you click on it, you get to switch between a whole range of resolutions, refresh rates as well as bit depth, covering just about any resolution you might want."

"Parallels Desktop is the first solution that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro.

Unlike dual-boot solutions, in which users must completely shut down Mac OS X and endure a full OS start-up cycle to access a important application, Parallels Desktop for Mac empowers users with the ability to run important Windows programs like Outlook, Access, Internet Explorer and all other applications without having to give up the usability and functionality of their Mac OS X machine even for a few minutes."

"Here's a common scenario: you need to make an emergency remote desktop connection to an XP server at work, but you're at home and the server is behind a firewall that blocks RDC connections."

"Using Putty (a rockstar ssh client for Windows), you can easily set up a tunnel for accessing RDC on your firewalled server."

Here is a very sad promotional Windows 95 video ("Cyber Sitcom") which stars Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry. It's painful to watch.

With the release of Microsoft's new Windows operating system (Vista), more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows for various reasons. In this tutorial I will show people who are willing to switch to Linux how they can set up a Linux desktop (Debian Etch in this article) that fully replaces their Windows desktop, i.e. that has all software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that runs also on older hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.
